Розробка уроку "St. Valentine’s Day"

Dear friends! Tomorrow people are going to celebrate St. Valentine’s Day. It is always held on February 14th. This holiday is for lovers. It is one of the most romantic holidays, which has been celebrated for 17 centuries already. Generations of young people have regarded St. Valentine as a friend and patron of sweethearts. On that day, people send Valentines, special cards with messages, to their wives and husbands, relatives and even neighbors. So, this is the holiday of love, happiness, and good will.

In addition, when we speak about St. Valentine’s Day, I always remind W. Shakespeare and his sonnets.

W. Shakespeare was really the greatest poet and playwright. And his masterpiece "Romeo and Juliet” is known all over the world. This beautiful love story is about two young people who loved each other and their love has passed through the ages.

(Сценка «Ромео и Джульетта»)

Romeo:  She speaks. O, speak again, bright angel:

Juliet:   O, Romeo. Deny thy father and refuse the name. and I’ll no longer be a Capulet.

Romeo:  Shall I hear more or shall I speak at this?

Juliet:   What’s Montaque? It is nor hand, nor foot, nor arm, nor face, nor any other part Belonging to a man. O, be some other name: What’s in a name? that which we call a rose. Be any other name would smell as sweet.

Romeo:  Call me but love, and I’ll be new baptized. Henceforth I never will be Romeo. My name is hateful to myself. Because it is an enemy to thee.

But not only Shakespeare was a God of love, a kind of Cupid, we can call St. Valentine. The are different legends about St. Valentine’s Day.

 (легенды)

there are several legends about St. V. D. one of the legends says that Valentine was Christian priest who lived in the 3 century AD. He was put into prison by roman authorities for his teachings and was beheaded on February 14.  According to the legend, he performed a miracle – he cured his jailer’s daughter of her blindness and the girl had fallen in love with him. Before the execution, he wrote her a letter signed "From Your Valentine.”

Another legend says that he wrote to children and friends who love him from the jail.

According to another legend, Valentine was an Italian bishop who lived at about the same time. He was thrown into prison because he secretly married couples, contrary to the laws of the Roman Empire, the latter believed that married men would want to stay at home with their families rather than fight his wars. The legend says that he was burnt at the stake.

And of course, you know that one of the most popular symbols of this day is Cupid, the Roman God of Love, who is represented by the image of a young boy with a bow and an arrow. Let’s invite him to us.

I make a string of Valentines,

Each one of rosy hue

And each shall bear a little verse

To say that I love you.

The first shall be of crimson hearts;

It bears the truthful line,

"This brings my love, my dearest love,

To you, my Valentine”.

And here I send, with poppies red,

These words your eyes to greet,

"My dearest thoughts, asleep, awake,

I give to you my sweet”.

A smiling band of cupids now

Take up the happy tale;

"Though time may bear us far apart,

My love shall never fail”.

This one I deck with ribbons red,

In loops and festoons gay;

It says: "My love to you I give,

Forever and a day”.

The next I make of roses bright,

Such as in summer grow:

It says: "My love for you will last,

While flowers come and go”.

On Valentine’s Day, people write poems to the people they love. Sometimes it isn’t easy to find the right words.

(Копия Say It with Poetry)

Here parts of the hearts. On the other side of the hearts, you have a half of the poem. Find your partner and reproduce the Valentine poem.

1). You are much sweeter

Than honey,

And you are also

Very funny

2). Do you like me,

Kate?

I think you are great!

 3). I’ll be your sweetheart

If you are mine

All of my life

I’ll be your Valentine.

4). Oh, Valentine! I love you so

I think of you all night

That’s why I’m sending you this poem,

Which I want to write.

You know this holiday is celebrated throughout the world. Moreover, each country has its own tradition. It was very popular to organize wedding on St. V.D. Saying that on this day the woman could come to her loner man and ask him to marry her. If he was not ready to get married, he had to thank her and present woman silk dress.

In Australia it has become costmary to present your sweetheart, a bunch of flowers for St. V. D. many different flowers are associated with this day, given as token of love. The type of flowers sent or decorating a card adds further meaning to your Valentine card. Try to guess which.

- This is a rose/ snowdrop/ lily/ forget-me-not/ poppy/ tulip.

- What does it symbolize?

Let’s check were you right. We’ll see the presentation and then you correct your mistakes.

(Презентация Цветы)

Usually in Great Britain on this day, there are a lot of puppet shows, drama performances connected with this event. Let’s see our drama theatre members performing an extract from "Hamlet” by W. Shakespeare.

Ophelia:  My lord, I have remembrances of yours. I pray you.

Hamlet:   Are you fair?

Ophelia:  What means your lordship?

Hamlet:  That if you are honest and fair, your honesty should admit no discourse to your beauty.

Ophelia:  Could beauty, my lord, have better commerce that with honesty.

Hamlet:   Ay, truly, for the power of beauty will sooner transform honesty from what it is to a bawd than the force of honesty can translate beauty into his likeness. I did love you once.

Ophelia:  Indeed, my lord, you made me believe so.

There is still another tradition connected with this holiday celebration in the USA.  On St. V.D. Americans sent (марципаны) to their sweethearts. But it was very expensive because (марципаны) contained sugar. So latter Americans began to make candy and other sweets on this day. Also they like to sing a song. Now girls try to sing "Love Story” for us.

 (Love Story песня)

 Where Do I Begin

Verse 1

Where do I begin

To tell the story of how great a love can be;

The sweet love story that is older than the sea,

The simple truth about the love she brings to me?

Where do I start?

 Verse 2

With her first hello,

She gave new meaning to this empty world of mine,

There'll never be another love, another time,

She came into my life and made the living fine,

She fills my heart,

 Bridge

She fills my heart with very special things,

With angels' songs, with wild imaginings,

She fills my soul with so much love,

That anywhere I go I'm never lonely;

With her along, who could be lonely?

I reach for her hand -- it's always there...

 Verse 3 (x2)

How long does it last?

Can love be measured by the hours in a day?

I have no answers now but this much I can say:

I know I'll need her till the stars all burn away,

And she'll be there.

Where do I begin

To tell the story of how great a love can be. W. Shakespeare said:

"Love all, trust a few, do wrong to none.”

Now, I want to invite A. Shumna. She has prepared the presentation "What is love?”

What is love? It is one of the most difficult questions for the mankind. Centuries have passed by, relationships have bloomed, and so has love. But no one can give the proper definition of love. To some love is friendship set on fire, for others love is like luck. You have to go all the way to find it. No matter how you define it or feel it, love is the eternal truth in the history of mankind.

Love enhances the relationship and comforts the soul. Love should be experienced and not just felt. The depth of love can not be measured. Look at the relationship between a mother and a child. The mother loves the child unconditionally and it can not be measured at all.

Depending on context, love can be of different varieties. It shared on a very intimate, interpersonal, and sexual relationship.

Maybe the person whom we see in front of us, may be least compatible than the person who is miles away. We might talk to each other and portray that we love each other, but practically we do not end up into any relationship. Also in compatibility, the key is to think about the long-term successful relationship, not a short journey. We need to understand each other and must always remember that nobody is perfect.

I and Юлия Сергеевна have prepared the presentation "What is Love?” We worked together the whole month. And this is our masterpiece

It’s a petty, but our holiday is finishing. But I want to remind you, we need just three things in life: something to do; something to look forward to; someone to love.

Many people would agree that they want to love and to be loved. That is why I wish you!
