II Task: You were planning to go to the cinema with your
friends this afternoon but your plans have changed. Leave a note for your
friends. Include this information: apologise for the change; explain why you can't go; offer them another day.
Answer:
Hi friends!
I’m really sorry, but I can’t go to the cinema
with you, as we have arranged. My granny was taken to the hospital today’s
morning, and I have to buy some medicine and other necessary things and take
them to the hospital. I will spend there some hours until my mom come from
work.
My mobile phone is discharged now, so let’s come
in touch tomorrow and set some other date when we can go to the cinema.
Sorry again, Peter

Talk about a sports event
you have seen recently (a football match, a car race, a swimming competition, a
dance tournament). Include this information:
why, when and where the event
took place; who took part in it and how they looked; when and how it started; who went with you to see
it; how you felt before and after the event
Answer:
Good
morning, my name is … and I’m a student of 9th form. My task is to tell you
about a football match I have visited.
Fortunately
I’m really keen on football and go to the football matches quite often. So for
me it isn’t a problem to recall my latest visit. Unfortunately I’m not a great
football fan and know very little about the procedure of the game. But I’ll try
to do my best and use my imagination to picture the situation.
So,
some days ago I visited a football game. It was a semi-final match for the Regional School’s Cup. Our school team met the team
of school 3. The match was held at our school stadium. There were more than one
thousand people at the stadium. They came from all the schools of the city,
because it was a really important event.
At 2 o’clock we saw the two teams in the field.
The home team were in orange shirts and the visitors’ team were in blue and
white shirts.
The
game started with the whistle of the referee. For the first 20 minutes the home
team were stronger and the ball was always on the visitors’ side of the field.
But then a player from visitors’ team scored the first goal. We simply moaned
with disappointment! Soon after that the referee stopped the game, because it
was half-time.
In the second half of the match the home team were
again the better players. They attacked all the time, and after 10 minutes they
scored the first goal. They scored again after a quarter of an hour; then, before
the game ended, they scored the third goal and so won the game.
We
were shouting and jumping, and cheering and waving our hands. When the game was
over, all of us were in high spirit, we felt cheerful and excited.
I
think that people come to the sport events to get rid of the stress, to forget
about their problems, about dull and boring routine of modern life and to gain
a lot of positive emotions. Of course it’s better when you do some sport
yourself, but being a sport fan you can also get a lot of fun, make new
friends, enrich you knowledge. You’ll never be bored or lonely if you are
interested in sports.

II Task:
Imagine that you are planning to
buy a new bike. You see one advertised in a ma gazine. Write a letter to the
shop asking for more information. Include this informa tion:
write where you saw the advert,
and why you are writing; explain what you need the bike for; ask your most important
question; ask your other questions.
Answer:
I am writing in response to your advertisement in
July’s issue of " TeenTime” magazine concerning new bicycles selling. I would
like to buy a new urban bicycle to go to school. It must be a light,
convenient, reliable vehicle at a reasonable price. I am particularly
interested in UB-140 Model on your price list. I wonder how many gears it has.
I would also like to know if you have this model in red colour. Finally I would
like to know in what time it can be delivered. I look forward to hearing from
you as soon as possible. Sincerely, Peter

Answer:
When I was a child I used to do a lot of things that
I don’t do now First of all it concerns the food I used to eat. Children don’t
have much choice. As a rule they have to eat the food their parents consider to
be healthy and useful for little children. I hated my everyday porridge and
milk soup. Now I can eat whatever I want and whenever I want. In my childhood I
used to eat 4 times a day and my parents didn’t allow me to have a bite between
the meals. I also used to wear all this clothes my parents consider to be smart
and lovely. And I had to be very clean and tidy. In winter I used to wear warm
sweaters and trousers, and scarves and mittens and warm hats – and I often felt
really stuffy in all this outfit! Now I prefer to wear jeans and sweatshirts in
winter and T-shirts in summer. I like convenient sporty clothes As for my daily
routine, I also used to obey some rules. For example I used to go to bed at 9
o’clock
sharp. It was a real torture for me! And I really hate this day nap in the
kindergarten!
But I like the games we used to play when we were kids.
If the weather was good we spent a lot of time in the yard and played hide-and
seek, hopscotch, tags and a lot of others. When we came back home we often were
dirty, hot, exhausted, but really happy.
I also used to play in the sandpit or ride my funny
orange bike.
Sometimes my parents took me to a kid’s caf? or
McDonald’s and I enjoyed eating ice-cream and jelly.
And of course I loved my weekends. I could sleep
as long as I wished and nobody came and said: "Get up! You have to tidy up your
room and clean the carpets and wash up!” Very often my parents took me to my
granny who lives in a village. It was really wonderful there, especially in summer,
when a lot of children came to their grandparents. There is a river near the
village and a pine forest, and we could spend the whole day swimming and
paddling and walking in the forest.
I also liked the moments in the evening when I was
in bed and my mom came with a book of fairy tales and sat down by the bed and
read it to me.
Of course, I don’t play with all those toys I used
to play when I was a child. Some years ago I gave them to my little nephew.
Now I’m busy with my school and sport club. I
spend a lot of time surfing the Internet or hanging out with my friends. But I
still like to visit my granny and the moments I can spend with my family.

II Task: Write an e-mail to your pen friend. Include this
information: an
appropriate greeting; an apology for not writing sooner; the news about yourself; an appropriate closing.
Answer:
Hi, buddy!
I hope you are OK. Sorry for the long silence –
I’ve been really busy with all these final tests and the end of the school
year. I’ve already passed 3 exams – quite good results, by the way – and 2 more
left. In … days we will have the prom (school-leaving party) and after that we
are planning to go hiking for 3days or so – of course, if the weather is good.
As I’m going to continue my education at school, I’ll have quite a lot of free
time in July and August. You could come to my place if you want, and we would spend
really great time.
Let me know if you have any ideas as for your
visit.
Looking forward for your answer.
Bye, …
III Task: Talk about a book you have
read recently. Include this information: what sort of book it is; what it is about; why you
chose it; what you liked about it; what you didn't like about
it.
Answer:
Good morning, my
name is … and I’m a student of the 9th form. I would
like to tell you about
the book I have read recently.
I must admit that I
haven’t had much time this month, as I’ve been really busy with my final tests
in all the subjects and my exams.
Sometimes I felt
definitely exhausted and I decided to find a book to read in my free time. I
wanted to read an exiting but not very complicated story about some imaginary,
even magic creatures and my friend saddest me "The Fellowship of the Ring” by
John Tolkien as a variant. "the Fellowship of the Ring” the first book of the
trilogy ‘The Lord of the Ring” is a great epic of its own. It’s a story of a
magical ring which has unusual power that change everything, As the story
begins, a hobbit named Frodo Baggings, receives a letter that has a ring
inside. Gandalf, a wizard, brings the letter to give to Frodo. They discover
that the ring cannot be destroyed in a usual way. Frodo, unsure about what to
do, decides to get rid of the ring. The only way to destroy it is to go to Mount Doom, a place surrounded by evil. On his
journey, Frodo meets people who help him. They are followed, however, by
Ring-wraiths ( Ring-ghosts), who have been searching for Frodo in order to take
away the Ring of Power so that their master, Sauron, can destroy everything
that is good in the Middle-Earth. The book has many aspects that I like.
Tolkien’s writing is full of descriptive words; the text seems to catch the
reader. Though sometimes the plot seems to be rather slow-moving and
heavy-going.
But all in all "The
Fellow of the Ring” is full of fantasy and adventure, which makes it a
must-read.
II Task:
Imagine that you have applied to go on one of the
TV shows advertised. Write an e-mail to a friend telling him/her about it.
Include this information: where
you saw the advertisement; why you want to go on the show; what you wrote on the
application form.
Answer:
Hi, buddy!
Guess what I am going to
do in a week? I’m going to take the audition for the part in a new reality show
on MTV Channel! I saw their ads in "TeenTime” magazine by cheer chance. There
was an application form there with quite ordinary staff: full name, age, sex,
family members, hobbies and what not. I filled it in and send to their e-mail
address. And today they called me and said that I suited their project
absolutely! I’m really crazy about it! It could be a brilliant opportunity for
me to start a career on TV. Keep your fingers crossed for me and wish me good luck.
I’ll keep in touch as soon as I pass the audition.
Bye, …
III Task: Imagine that you are going to spend a month in England on an English-language course. Give the
information to the family you are going to stay. Include this information:
introduction,
general personal details; say something about your village / town / city and
your country; say something about your hobbies and interests
Answer:
Good morning, my name is …. and I’m a student of
the 9th form. I’m going to give a self-presentation and tell you about myself,
my family, my hometown and my hobbies and interests.
I live in Chernihiv. It is and administrative,
political and economic center of Chernihiv Region, or, as we call it, oblast.
The city is situated in the north-western part of Ukraine, 150
km from Kyiv, the capital of our country, on the right bank of the Desna
river. It is interesting to mention that the Slavonic word "Desna” means "right”, because the Desna is a right tribute of the Dnieper, the main river of Ukraine and the third longest river in Europe.
According to the legends the city derives
its name from prince Chorny an ancient ruler of the city and its daughter,
princess Charna, or from dark ( which means "chorny” in Ukrainian) forests
which surrounded the city in those times. Chernihiv is one of the most ancient
cities of the country, it is 1 300 years old, that’s why there are a lot
of historic landmarks there. 5 of 25 Ukrainian historic monuments included in
the "World Treasures’ List” by UNESCO are located in Chernihiv. The most
popular tourist attractions in the city is Val or Rampart – the former citadel
of Chernihiv princes. There you can see a magnificent cathedral of
Transfiguration of our Savior and a cathedral of St Borys and Gleg – both dates
back to the 11th century. At the entrance to the city on a hill there is a
beautiful church of St Catherine, which considers to be a visiting
card of Chernihiv. On the Rampart you can also see 12 cannons – they were presented
to the city by the first Russian emperor Peter the First after his victory over
the Swedish army at the beginning of 18th century. Another place of interest is
the Boldin hill. "Bold” means "An oak” in Slavonic language and the oak was a
sacred tree to the Slavs in pre-christian times. I know that in England the oak was also worshipped by the
druids. There are still some oaks on the Boldin Hill, but the main attraction
of the place is St Antony’s Caves – an ancient cave monastery that is older
that famous Kyiv- Pechersk Lavra.
Chernihiv
is one of the greenest city of Ukraine – more than 30 sq m of greenery
allotted to each resident. The city manages to combine its ancient glory with
tense and hectic rhythm of modern life. I really wish everybody could come and
enjoy the beauty of my native city.
And now some words about
my hobby…
